Botox® and Dermal Filler FAQ

Botox® and Dermal Filler FAQ

Botox®

BOTOX® is also used to reduce the wrinkles associated with crow’s feet, bunny lines, lines on the forehead and any other facial wrinkles caused by the movement of facial muscles. BOTOX® can also lift and arch the eyebrows or smooth out the chin. Many people report they look 10 years younger after successful BOTOX® injections.

How does Botox® work?

When we frown, blink or squint, small muscles contract which causes the skin tissue to fold and form small “dynamic” wrinkles. These wrinkles become more apparent as we get older and the skin becomes thinner and less supple. BOTOX® is a purified and diluted form of a protein that significantly reduces the nerve impulses to the small facial muscles, allowing them to relax and the dynamic wrinkles to be less apparent.

Can Botox® be combined with other procedures?

In fact using BOTOX® with procedures such as laser procedures, microdermabrasion, photodynamic therapy with Levulan and dermal fillers such as Restylane® offer synergistic benefits for the absolute best results per a client’s needs.

How long do the effects last?

Most people find that the BOTOX® effects begin from two days to two weeks following the procedure. The effects can last from 3 to 6 months. Most clients will receive 3 to 4 BOTOX® procedures per year.

Are there any common side effects?

Adverse reactions are rare. The most common is slight bruising at the injection site which resolves in a day or two. Occasionally BOTOX® may cause a facial asymmetry during expression or a drooping eyelid. This is very uncommon and will typically resolve in a few weeks.

Do the injections hurt?

BOTOX® injections are performed with a very fine needle and cause very little pain with most patients. Placing ice on the skin before and after the injection makes this almost pain free for even the most sensitive patient.

What to do before my procedure?

One week prior to your procedure avoid taking aspirin, NSAIDs, St. John’s Wort, fish oil and high doses of Vitamin E supplements. These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site. If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence. Ask us about medications that may minimize such a recurrence.

What to do after your procedure?

Immediately after the procedure the most common reported side effects are temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to three days. Cold compresses may be used immediately after procedure to reduce swelling. If the inconvenience of post-procedure symptoms continues beyond two to three days or if other reactions occur, please contact NEOS MedSpa.

Avoid touching the treated area within six hours following your procedure. After that, you can safely use a gentle cleanser with water.
Until the initial redness and swelling have resolved, avoid exposure of the treated area to intense heat (sunlamp or sunbathing).
Avoid exercise and alcohol for six hours.

Restylane®

Since it was launched in 1996, RESTYLANE has undergone extensive histological and clinical studies with an increasing body of evidence relating to its ease of use, tolerability and effectiveness. Today, more than 1,500,000 procedures have been successfully carried out worldwide making it the most common dermal filler. Restylane® is a biodegradable NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid) crystal-clear gel which is injected into the mid to deep dermis in minute amounts with a very small needle. Restylane® has the highest concentrate of hyaluronic acid available of any dermal filler; it has 20 parts of hyaluronic acid per 1 ml compared to others that have 5 parts of hyaluronic acid per 1ml.

How does Restylane® work?

Restylane® has been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles such as in the nasolabial area because it has the unique ability to bind with water and draw water into the needed areas of the skin, decreasing wrinkles and folds. Therefore, when it is injected into the mid dermis, Restylane® adds volume and fullness to smooth facial wrinkles and folds and it enhances the appearance and fullness of lips.

How much does it cost?

First Syringe* is $525
Each additional Syringe is $400**
Additional procedures may be needed to maintain the desired effect.
*NEOS uses only FDA approved fillers.
**Additional syringe charge only applies when using more then one syringe in the same area

Can Restylane® be combined with other procedures?

Combination therapies can most definitely maximize your results. Combinations of Restylane® with different types of procedures and products offered at NEOS MedSpa such as lasers, Botox and pharmaceuticals can provide a better outcome across the board, depending on the condition and whether it is employed for medical or cosmetic reasons.

How long to the results last?

Restylane® generally lasts up to 4 to 6 months depending on the patient’s skin structure and age. Evidence shows that having a follow-up procedure before the product has fully dissipated will enhance the lasting effect.

Are there any common side effects?

Restylane® is not recommended for patients with severe allergies or a history of hypersensitivity. The safety of Restylane® in pregnant or breast-feeding women has not been established and therefore NEOS MedSpa does not offer this procedure for those women.

Do I need a skin test before being treated with Restylane®?

No skin testing is required prior to use.

Does the procedure hurt?

There may be a little discomfort, although at NEOS MedSpa, we use a dental block to maximize our patient comfort.

Sculptura®

Reduce your deep wrinkles and/or enhance your lips for a more youthful look. Each patient will be evaluated individually to assess which product is best for any of the following areas: marionette lines, frown lines, smile lines, vertical lip lines, glabellar “worry” lines, forehead lines, nasolabial lines, sunken cheeks, moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and some facial scarring. Composed of synthetic lactic acid-based sugar, this injectable dermal filler restores and corrects the signs of aging due to fat or collagen loss. This product is dfferent than all other fills because it provides a gradual increase in skin volume by stimulating collagen production rather than simply causing a temporary effect.

How does Sculptura® work?

Sculptra® is an injectable product that restores and corrects the signs of facial fat loss by replacing lost volume. Sculptra® injections cause the body to react by stimulating collagen production, increasing the thickness of the skin in the area of the injection. This helps to create a more natural facial appearance in people concerned with a decreased fullness in the face due to the effects of aging, sun damage or chronic illness. Sculptra® is injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss. Visible results appear within the first few procedure sessions.

How much does Sculptura cost?

Cost per Vial* is $1,200
Series of 3 Vials* is $3,400
Expect to have at least three procedures
*NEOS uses only FDA approved fillers

How long do the results last?

Initial swelling from the injections may seem to indicate immediate results, however this swelling will decrease in a few days. Sculptra® takes time to gradually rectify the hollow areas in your skin; results will differ for each person. In a clinical study, results lasted for up to 2 years after the first procedure in most patients. Our In-House Physician will decide the appropriate number of sessions and the amount of Sculptra® you will need at each session. Patients with severe facial fat loss may require 3 to 6 sessions.

What happens during the procedure?

NEOS MedSpa’s In-House Physician will answer all of your questions and prepare you for your procedure. Make-up should be removed. The area where the injections will be given will be cleaned with an antiseptic. You and our In-House Physician will determine if a local anesthetic is needed. Sculptra® will be injected in small amounts into the skin using a very fine needle. Multiple injections will be needed. We will then thoroughly massage the treated area to distribute the product evenly. While sitting in our relaxation room you will be provided an ice pack which should be applied to the treated area to help reduce swelling.

Do I need a skin test before being treated with Sculptura®?

No skin testing is required prior to use.

Do the injections hurt?

As with any injection, Sculptra® may hurt. Sculptra® is injected in small amounts using a very fine needle. At NEOS MedSpa we use a Dental Block to maximize our patients’ comfort.

How is Sculptura® different from dermal fillers like Restylane®, Hylaform, etc.?

With other filler products such as Hylaform or Restylane® , the visible effect is directly due to the space occupied by the injectable material and this effect decreases over 4 to 6 months as the product is metabolized. The visual effect of Sculptra is not due to the space occupied by the product, but rather the body’s reaction to the material. Therefore, the visual effect of the procedure is maintained long after the product has been fully metabolized.

What are the possible side effects of Scuptura®?

The most common side effects with the use of Sculptra® include injection-related results at the site of the injection such as bleeding, tenderness or pain, redness, bruising or swelling. These side effects generally last 3 to 17 days. One possible delayed side effect with Sculptra® can be small bumps under the skin in the treated area. These bumps tend to happen within the first 6 to 12 months after the first procedure. These bumps can go away on their own. As with all procedures that involve an injection through the skin there is a risk of infection.

What to do before your procedure?

One week prior to your procedure avoid taking aspirin, NSAIDs, St. John’s Wort and high doses of Vitamin E supplements. These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site. If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence. Ask us about medications that may minimize such a recurrence.

What to do after your procedure?

Your initial fullness will dissipate within a few days. Many clients are disappointed when this happens however the long term results occur within the next 2-4 weeks. We will schedule a follow-up appointment at NEOS MedSpa after a minimum of two weeks to evaluate your desire for further procedures.

Apply an ice pack to the treated area intermittently for the first 24 hours after your procedure to minimize swelling; avoid any direct contact of the ice with the skin.
Thoroughly massage the treated area for five minutes twice daily for several days following your procedure to evenly distribute the product.
Make-up may be applied after six hours if no complications are present (e.g. open wounds, bleeding, redness and swelling).
Sculptra may cause redness, swelling or bruising when first injected into the skin. Some bruising may take anywhere from one day to two weeks to resolve.
Sculptra can cause very small bumps called “papules” in the treated area. Typically, these papules are beneath the surface, are not visible, do not cause symptoms and may be noticed only when pressing on the treated area. Visible nodules, sometimes with redness or color changes to the skin have also been reported.
Avoid touching the treated area within six hours following your procedure. After that, you can safely use a gentle cleanser with water.
Until the initial redness and swelling have resolved, avoid exposure of the treated area to intense heat (sunlamp or sunbathing).
Avoid exercise and alcohol for six hours after the procedure.
Report any side effects to our office.
